Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland

The Champagne Pool - f/3.5 | 1/400 sec | ISO 100
We followed a trail around the Waiotapu thermal area with great views of many interesting features. The Champagne Pool is the largest spring in the district - 62m deep in places and a surface temperature of 74 degrees C! It was formed 700 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption.

Pied Stilt - f/6.3 | 1/400 sec | ISO 125
I saw many Pied Stilts on the flats within the park where they feed on insects. Surprisingly they seemed quite unconcerned about the acidic water they are wading in! It is generally believed they have been in New Zealand since the early 19th century, with the main growth in population between 1870-1940 and there was an estimated 30,000 individuals in the country in the early 1990s.

Pied Stilt II - f/5.6 | 1/500 sec | ISO 150
Although they are generally shy birds, this one seemed to love the attention and walked very close to where I was sitting on the boardwalk!
